This study adresses the communicational aspects of the graphs known as “flattening the curve” of the covid-19 pandemic. These charts have become popular in the news coverage of this health crisis, as they show the relevance of social isolation measures to deal with the contagion. The chosen graphics were analyzed using concepts from Charles Peirce's semiotics. We argue that the proliferation of numerous versions of the graph of the flattening of the curve characterizes a phenomenon of semiosis, articulating meanings about the pandemic. We emphasize the diagrammatic and symbolic properties of these signs, whose multiple interpretive effects provide a broader understanding of the problem.
