Abstract

Based on the statement made by soccer judge Igor Junio ​​​​Benevenuto about being homosexual, the present work aims to discuss the social, historical and cultural issues that intertwine homophobia and contemporary Brazilian soccer. The core of the research focuses on analyzing the comments presented in a publication by the Globo Esporte newspaper on Instagram. In order to understand the meaning produced by them, the methodological perspective of analyzing the construction of meaning in digital networks defines three categories to think about as the formation of identity and natural character for the construction of the logics of heteronormativity, compulsory heterosexuality and hegemonic masculinity, observed in the soccer world, co-responsible for installing certain standards of behavior among the public and professionals in the field.
