Abstract

The book by researcher Aira F. Bonfim, published in 2023, aims to rescue the history of women's football in Brazil from 1915 until its prohibition by law in 1941. Divided into three chapters, the study, based on information found in newspapers and magazines, covers the experiences of girls and women in sports festivals, circuses and suburbs. With a provocative proposal that challenges hegemonic narratives of an alleged “official history of football”, the work highlights female figures who were part of the development of this sport, reveals unpublished historical sources, maps the occurrence of women's games at the beginning of the 20th century and systematizes the introductory milestones of practice on a national scene. Furthermore, it promotes analyzes of the gender inequalities that permeate this scenario. Thus, the book becomes a fundamental reference for studies on women's football.

Author Biography

Érika Alfaro de Araújo, Universidade Estadual Paulista

Érika Alfaro de Araújo is PhD student in the Postgraduate Program in Communication from the São Paulo State University (Unesp), holds a Master of Communication from the São Paulo State University (Unesp), Brazil, and is a journalist graduated at the same university. Conducts research in the line of Media Processes and Sociocultural Practices with a focus on sports journalism and its relationships with gender studies.
