Dramaturgies and performances of the academy
a Goffmanian reading of the presentation of works at events

This text outlines some aspects of the presentation of papers at academic events. A privileged moment of participation in a scientific community, it is also a highly ritualized interactional process, in which success or failure can alter the prestige and recognition of the presenter. Based on bibliographic research and overt participant observation, it is possible to delimit three moments of this dramaturgy: (1) the organization of the scene, with tensions between institutional norms and autonomy in defining group dynamics; (2) the performance of the presentation and script breaks; and (3) the ritual dimensions in the interactions at question time. These aspects are analyzed from the dramaturgical perspective of interactions developed by Erving Goffman.
