Abstract

This paper analyzes and compares images of manuscripts in Alain Resnais's film Night and Fog (1956). In the documentary, we see records with distinct origins: texts from Holocaust victims and texts from their executioners. These two materialities, in archival theory, share similarities, such as the oscillation between institutional and conservative, between revolutionary and traditional (Derrida, 2001); yet, in their dissimilarity, they retain what is decisive for each other. The first one, undoubtedly, is a mode of insubordination whose survival is residual. Here, I mobilize the reflections of Georges Didi-Huberman, Jacques Derrida, and Roland Barthes on archive, image, and text, discussing the mode of appearance of manuscripts.

Luís Matheus Brito Meneses, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Luís Matheus Brito nasceu em Aracaju, em 1994. É escritora, editora e pesquisadora. Faz doutorado em Estudos Literários pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), onde pesquisa a obra do escritor argentino Ricardo Piglia. É jornalista e mestra em Estudos Literários pela Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS), onde defendeu uma dissertação sobre a ficção do escritor brasileiro Silviano Santiago.
