Indigenous ethnomedia:

rádio Yandê and Mídia Indígena educommunication and the production of counter-narratives

Abstract

Two observations motivated the writing of this article: the educommunicational bias and the counter-narratives produced by indigenous ethnomedia – media conceived and run exclusively by indigenous communicators, focusing on the appreciation of traditions, cultures, and issues that impact the lives of indigenous peoples and their territories. Indigenous ethnomedia diverges from the standards of hegemonic media – from agenda-setting to framing and approaches – and constructs new narratives. The article discusses audiovisual productions that engage with indigenous intercultural education, paying special attention to indigenous youth, aiming to evoke a sense of belonging and involvement in content creation. The ethnomedia Rádio Yandê and Mídia Indígena are selected as the corpus for being references on the topic, while the methodology is based on netnography.
