Simulations and Pop Culture as tools to teach International Relations

This article aims to introduce and discuss the possibilities arising from the use of the active learning strategies in International Relations courses in Brazil. It addresses the use of two strategies that would enrich the learning process of students. These are (i) the combination of nontraditional reading material, with emphasis on elements of pop culture, and (ii) the use of simulations and games in classroom. These elements would complement traditional teaching methods in at least three aspects. First, it leads students to situations they are familiar with. Second, it promotes the development of problem-solving ability based on the information and knowledge constituted in class. Finally, it builds meaningful connections between what is being studied and the reality that surrounds students. In that fashion, I suggest that such resources facilitate the development of a pedagogical environment with lasting results and, consequently, the emphasis on more by efficient learning tools.
