One of the main characteristics of globalization is that it has not only caused a growing permeability of state borders in Westphalian terms, but it has also led to the restructuring of the articulations between the local and the international dynamics, through what has been called cross-border spaces. But, what motivates the construction of cross-border cities/regions? Our hypothesis is that the construction of cross-border cities/regions finds its main motivation more in terms of geographical proximity within the framework of globalization from which economic and commercial dynamics are derived, as well as massive migratory circularity, than in traditional nationalisms. To demonstrate our argument, we compared the construction processes of the cities/region of Tijuana-San Diego and Zhuhai-Macao as cross-border spaces. Based on this, we have found that the cross-border dynamics observed in such cases are not only paradigmatic and global in scope, but also of special relevance to Latin America.
