Abstract

Over the decades, Middle Eastern security has been influenced by both strong regional and global security interdependencies. Since the demise of the Cold War, the U.S. has played a major role in determining the region’s security, with the Gulf Cooperation Council states becoming increasingly dependent on American security guarantees. However, the U.S. strategic pivot to the Asia-Pacific region and China’s increasing consolidation as a global power has set the Middle East’s security dynamics again into flux. This article employs a regional security complex framework, paired with a realist theoretical lens, to analyze how the growing Sino-American rivalry affects Persian Gulf security by identifying the interests of these two powers in the Middle East and the emerging regional dynamics.
