Article Structural economic factors underlying the left turn. A comparison between Colombia, Brazil and Uruguay

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to compare the cases of Colombia, Brazil and Uruguay regarding economic indicators: poverty, inequality, unemployment, inflation and growth of the informal sector, in order to establish the possible association between the deterioration of these indicators and the change electoral preferences or ideological cycle from right to left, as established by the political theory on the successful cases of the new left during its first wave. It also seeks to establish if there was a similar effect for Colombia despite the fact that the new left in this country arrived two decades late. To do this, comparative data between the three countries is used specifically on these indicators and comparative graphs on dates immediately prior to the presidential elections in order to capture the current economic situation in said countries.
