Abstract
The narrative of the compassionate Samaritan (Lk 10,30-35) fits in the discussion about the characteristics of the true follower, central on chapter 10 of the Gospel. In this story, the disciple's attitude is inextricably linked to compassion, which plays a fundamental role in the structure of the report. This article offers an advance in the understanding of the use of verb σπλαγχνίζομαι (“to be moved by compassion”) in Lk 10,25-37 from a narrative analysis of the pericope, focusing on the role of the verb in the plot and its interpretation in light of its literary context. After analyzing the stylistic and narrative elements of the report, we present the importance of “being moved by compassion” in the story of the compassionate Samaritan (Lk 10,25-37), in a wider delimitation of the pericope of the dialogue of Jesus with the jurist (10,25-37), in the wider plot of the road to Jerusalem, started in Lk 9,51, and in the Gospel of Luke. The verb “to be moved by compassion” is particularly chosen to compose the journey to Jerusalem, connecting the missionaries, the jurist and the Samaritan and illustrating the mark of the little ones who inherit heaven: compassion.
