Abstract

In the early 19th century, revolutions for independence broke out in many Spanish colonies in the Americas. One of the leaders and greatest exponents of this period was Simón Bolívar, a Venezuelan military officer who conceived a particular political project for the region. Thus, the question this paper seeks to answer is: to what extent did power disputes within local elites interfere with Simón Bolívar’s political project during the
Spanish American independences of the nineteenth century? The general objective is to analyse Simón Bolívar’s political project amidst the expulsion of the Spanish from the Americas and the subsequent power disputes. This is research with a qualitative approach. As to the procedures, it is characterized as documentary and bibliographical research. For this, sources in Spanish, English and Portuguese were accessed. The results indicate that, during the conflicts, centrifugal forces contrary to Bolívar’s idealism prevailed, and it was up to local elites to employ the authoritarianism previously performed by the Spaniards.
