This article aims to analyze the combined effects of variables at the international (international insertion) and domestic (political regime) levels in the cooperation patterns sustained among Brazil and South Africa, Nigeria, Angola and Cape Verde, during the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government ( 2003-2010). The chosen time frame is justified by the interest in analyzing cooperation between Brazil and each African country in which Brazil has become a global player. Different patterns of cooperation are defined according to: a) greater or lesser propensity to cooperate; b) predominance of a given dimension of cooperation (political; economic; financial; technical or scientific and technological) and c) certain forms of cooperative articulation (bloc-type, issue-based, and support). The analysis of the phenomenon follows the guidelines of the cross-sectional comparative method. It is concluded that the cooperation between middle powers (Brazil-South Africa/and Brazil-Nigeria) is intense in more complex dimensions, such as science and technology, takes the form of bloc-type cooperative articulation, and is extended to themes such as human rights and the environment in the presence of a democratic dyad (Brazil-South Africa). The cooperation between a middle power and a small power (Brazil-Cape Verde/and Brazil-Angola) is concentrated in less complex dimensions (trade, technical cooperation), is organized in the issue-based and/or support forms, but can be expanded in presence of a democratic dyad (Brazil-Cape Verde).
