Signs of the anti-racist struggle in the music video “Junho de 94”
a semiotic analysis

This article engages in the debate on the anti-racist struggle through a semiotic analysis of the videographic
production of rapper Djonga. Based on Peircean semiotics, as systematized and applied by Santaella (2005), the music video for the song Junho de 94 is examined, highlighting seven signs related to the anti-racist theme. The analysis identifies representations of sin-signs, quali-signs, and legi-signs, including the rope around Djonga’s neck, the contrasts of social inequality in the settings, the Brazilian flag, the subordination of the Black patriarch to the white family, the attention given to the protagonist of the video’s narrative, the order of execution, and the presence of the bathroom after his supposed death. The results indicate a predominance of primarily symbolic signs, reinforced by visual contrast and photographic framing, which guide the viewer’s gaze toward key elements of the narrative.
