Abstract

Costume design plays a crucial role in audiovisual productions, contributing significantly to the construction of characters and their narrative arcs by conveying emotions and sensitivities that connect viewers to the spatiotemporal dimensions of the story. In this regard, the present study examines the costume design of the protagonists in Netflix’s original series Girls from Ipanema  (2021), Adélia and Maria Luiza, aiming to highlight the influence of clothing on the development of their narrative arcs. Methodologically, we adopt a qualitative perspective, grounded in a bibliographic review and exploratory research. The analytical corpus consists of the protagonists' narrative arcs throughout the first season of the series. The article underscores the properties of costume design in Girls from Ipanema as visual elements that, even implicitly and metaphorically, enhance the understanding of the analyzed characters and the overarching narrative.
