The concept of a book is not given, and the approaches to its study can be aligned with what has been called multimodality, especially influenced by the work of Gunther Kress, in the conciliation between analog and digital technologies. Here we make an attentive reflection on his book Literacy in the new media age, on aspects that are still little discussed in Brazil. The intention is to illuminate and expand propositions that Kress (2003) suggested as questions for reading and the book in the 20th century. Given the possibilities of materialization of books – for smartphones and e-readers, for example –, we highlight the fact that screens are now fundamental for the consumption of texts and speeches. The book is approached in a plural, bibliodiverse conception, excluding the ideas of competition and exclusivity.
