Abstract

With the demarcation of the drought of 1877, the waves of migrants to Fortaleza gave rise to the naming of subjects considered to be “strangers” by referring to them as retirantes and flagellados. Unlike synonyms, words are constituted as meanings that consider the conditions of possibility of agencies in the midst of a given space-time. With this in mind, this article mainly uses textualizations by Rodolpho Teóphilo and José do Patrocínio to discuss the propositions of meanings in which these words become entangled as designs for the presence of the sertanejo in urban spaces; and, with this, they establish themselves as witnesses to relations with the drought.
