Abstract

This article presents results of a study on the memories and archives of carnival in São Félix, Recôncavo da Bahia, during the period 1925-1975. The cultural and social dimensions of the São Félix carnival were analyzed based on publications in two local newspapers – Jornal A Vanguarda and Correio de São Félix – and the memorial reports of 03 revelers. This narrative set encouraged the exercise of a cultural analysis that, when understanding texts as cultural forms, risks an always unstable and conjunctural reading of the lived reality. Along this path, the study highlighted a São Félix intertwined with multiple cultural practices and that accompanied the country's cultural and social movement, revealing that carnival was an instrument of sociability, which provided cultural exchange between revelers, strengthened identity ties and explained social tensions experienced.
